“Reaching Out to Persons
with Disabilities (PWDs)”
Project Description:
Integral to the
Club’s organizational guiding principle and advocacy of “BAYANIHAN – the spirit
of serving others,” the club has given new light to the urgent call “to extend
a helping hand to those who find themselves in the existential peripheries of
our societies” as well as to the universal concern “to show solidarity with the
most vulnerable.”
Now a part of its continuing
commitment to service, the club adopted a project to reach out to persons with
disabilities (PWDs).
The
component-program of the project consists of the following: a) speech and communication
skills training; b) productivity and job readiness, c) good citizenship and
spiritual formation.
Area of Focus Addressed:
As officially defined,
“a PWD is an individual who is unable to do something in a certain way” as well
as one with “an incapacity to perform due to impairments in sensory, physical,
cognitive and other areas of functioning.”
Republic Act No.
7277 or the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons in the Philippines provides the
legal basis and obligation of government and society in the care and assistance
of “handicapped and differently-abled persons.”
Directed to cater
to PWDs, the project is especially inclusive.
Beneficiaries of the program are not restricted to PWDs only. It is also open to normal individuals wanting
to learn sign language as a form of communication skill for employment or
simply to serve others, be job-ready by the development of productive skills,
acquire good personal character traits and spiritual growth, thus, become an
agent of light and inspiration – like Rotarians.
Rotarian Participation:
This program
offers an opportunity for Rotarians to promote Rotary and its objectives and
core values to the general public in helping build the future of PWDs.
The basic skills and productivity activities together with the
character and spiritual growth sessions will serve as the occasion for club
members’ involvement in the project.
Member’s participation also includes efforts to solicit financial support
and enlistment of other civic-minded members of the community to be additional
resource-volunteers for the project.
